Where we give some facts from Singapore's illustrious history
1969 Race riots
The seven days of communal riots of 1969, a result of the spillover of the 13 May Incident in Malaysia, resulted in a final toll of 4 dead and 80 wounded. It was triggerred by the results of the General Election. Riot between the Chinese and Malays.
The 1969 riots occured not long after the 1964 riots. One of the leading causes of the riot is because of the United Malays Organistaion's desire to assert Malay dominance in Singapore. It led to heightened tensions between Chinese and Malays as they were the majority in Singapore at that time. Also, the Malays were not satisfied over the social and economic condition.
There has been evidence of aggressive and racist behavior among Singaporeans, usually towards foreign workers or the minority races.
A survey by Singapore's government-linked Institute of Policy Studies released this year showed that over 30 percent of citizens and permanent residents felt that nationality-based prejudice had risen over the past five years.
