So what?
Stereotyping
Regardless of whether they admit it, many people subject to stereotyping the foreigners in their countries.
This stereotyping is usually unintentional, however it can make a big difference for the foreigners. Their stereotyping may stem from various means.
One such way of stereotyping is that people take what happened in the past and use it to judge the current generation of foreigners from a certain country when the acts were committed by their ancestors. Also, gossip and rumors spread from unreliable sources can hinder the judgement of locals.
More commonly, people do not know others well and end up judging people based on what they see. This is stereotyping. Take a look at some of the stereotypes against foreigners in other countries. They are subject to much discrimination and are not thought of as “human” in some cases too and will eventually result in the locals disliking or hating. It is essential that Singapore should avoid this.
What can I do?
As many Singaporeans nowadays are getting xenophobic, we have come up with what we think would be great help. The foreigners in Singapore, too, have their own sets of struggles. Many a time, they are overworked and paid very little (which they still have to remit) to their families and they have trouble settling down in a foreign land with no one they are familiar with. Their suffering is pretty much too, as this list goes on. More importantly, we want Singaporeans, such as the future leaders of tomorrow, to understand the foreigners. Have an open mind and learn to accept them. After taking a look through our website we hope you will be able to understand better.
As we mentioned above, we must understand them in order not to stop discriminating them. Say, your foreign neighbours. You can start by getting to know them better. A good way of doing that is just a simple greeting when you meet them in the corridors. Also, you can pay them a visit (at a suitable time) to introduce you and your family and get to know them better. Of course, Don’t be rude!
